A lot of the time, finding boxing gloves is pretty straightforward and easy. Women’s wrists are generally smaller than men’s wrists so if you are women who are just started learning how to box or looking forward to your first boxing class, look no further because I came up with simple ways on how you choose your first boxing gloves
Remember this is not hard and fast rules. This is merely a guideline of how I have chosen my gloves.
SIZE CHART
Measure the circumference of your hand this way. SHOW (IMAGE)
Your weight, height and circumference of your dominant hand. Dominant hand means the hand you use most of the time to do basic movement like holding a pen or open a door. Circumference of your hand can be measure with measuring tape or use a fabric. Measure around the knuckle like how you wrap your hand wrap
Different brands has slightly different size chart. Here is where you can take a look at different brands of gloves that I have round up my favourite few and brands that are reliable.
Hand wrap or no wrap
Some gloves have enough wrist cushion so you don’t have to use hand wrap. I never have been a fan of not wearing one. I remember my first experience without one, my wrist hurts and felt a little sprain! Here is a post where I explain about wrist injury and using a hand wrap is a great idea. It doesn’t matter what kind you are getting
Type of class you are planning to do
Is it sparring ?
Is it for hitting the heavy bag?
Is it for general fitness boxing class?
Is it mitt work with your trainer?
It is safe to say to have more cushion for your gloves. I use 8oz for mitt work and 14oz or even 16 oz for heavy bag regardless of what brand I used. On top of that I used hand wrap all the time regardless of how long I been boxing. Also take note, you definitely know ahead if you are going to spar with anyone. I have never felt any pain or discomfort even after over 2 hours of training if I feel like it.
4. Volume of Training
Estimate what it is for you when it comes to training volume.
Let’s say you box 3 times per week, an hour per session. This is consider moderate to high volume of boxing sessions. No matter what brand or how many ounce glove you used, it’s of course the gloves would wear off little by little over time.
Knowing a little more of the volume of training would help with your purchase of your gloves. I always rotate between 2 different kind of gloves. Another reason I have spare gloves because I prefer to give more time to air out the gloves.
*Your gloves should feel snug not tight that you can feel the end of your finger cramping up.
Thanks a lot for this valuable detailed post about size of woman boxing gloves. This is a really important post. My sister is playing boxing. I think she will find this post very valuable. When choosing them, we must be careful about the training volume. Keep posting like this. I will definitely share.
Thanks Pasindu!
