Different Types of Jump Rope

Did you know there is different types of jump rope?

Back in PE class, we all been given this simple equipment well know as jump rope or it is also known as skipping rope. Jumping rope has a lot benefit to your health more than you think. Here is a fact, 5 minute of jumping rope is the same as running for 15 minutes!

If you don’t look forward to running or jogging as part of your cardiovascular training like I do then substitute to jump rope. You won’t be disappointed! Dare I say this because I jump rope as help me increase speed on my lower body, endurance.

I used to think any jumping rope can do the work just the same. I was wrong as soon as I start working in gyms and found out there is variety of jump rope. This blows my mind and got me to try each one. There is basics, speed, and even leather. If you are looking for better ones, here is my reviews on these 3 different types of jump rope.

Basic

Which one is the basic one? This is the one that is made up of PVC plastic and it’s handle is a rubber handle. Basic is the one that most people own. This type of jump rope is the one that we used back in school and mostly in commercial gyms. This can be used for beginners who wants to learn fundamental for jumping rope which make sense that it was widely used in schools. Price range starts for a basic jump rope is typically from $12.

Speed

The speed type jump rope is thin and easy to adjust. By it’s name SPEED means it’s meant for speed which can improve your double under. Speed rope can be a great speed rope for anyone who wants to increase agility and adding variations like cross over.

Leather

This was something new to me until a few years ago. My buddy gave it to me when he found his old leather rope he used in his last boxing gym. I have never seen or use a leather rope. It is not too bad but I don’t see any more benefit it has than a speed rope. Obviously it is more heavier and used more energy to get it underneath each jump.

My choice of jump rope out of this 3 is the speed rope. It is the lightest as it helps trememdously with speed. It being the lightest makes it easy to carry everywhere. This jump rope has travel with me in suitcases, bags, gym, hotel gym and even in some of fitness class that I conduct and my client likes it too. Nothing is worst than the rope always stuck and hit you, it really sting!

I highly recommend speed rope because jump rope should be the easiest part of training in boxing classes. It helps you to bring it to class or even anywhere outdoor.

    1. Basic jump ropes are geared toward those learning the fundamentals of jumping rope.

    2. Speed jump ropes have just that purpose in their name.

    3. Weighted jump ropes give your arms a workout but can help strengthen your shoulders, too.

    4. Breaded.

    5. Leather

    6. And cloth.

What type of jump rope would you suggest for a beginner like me?

  2. Great Article, I should let my nine year old read this page, she loves jumping rope, specially during warm weather outside, in the backyard, she has such speed and has flexibility and resistance.

Are these ropes for children too?

If I get her The Speed Rope, is it good for a nine year old?

She will have so much fun

Thanks for sharing these types of ropes! I learn something new today.

    1. Hi Ana, I recommend for your child to use the speed rope because it is adjustable and very light. Since she loves jump rope and more advance in her jump, speed rope is perfect for her. 🙂
