Different Types Of Boxing Gloves

To be able to constantly be boxing, you want to make sure that you get a great pair of boxing gloves. Boxing gloves are one of the few must have equipment you have to pay attention to. In my other article where I talk about hand wrap, this should be the first to priorities before a pair of gloves. You can check it out and get a pair of gloves together.  A pair of gloves and hand wraps always go together.

It depends on how much boxing you do every week, this might be another factor to consider. Additionally of course you have to consider the budget, looks and how much protection it is giving your wrist, joint, tendon. The last factor is crucial for the health of your well being. A broken hands will affect the way you live your life everyday. I highly suggest consider how much protection a pair of gloves can give you.

I am going to explain the different types that I have used over the years and what I think of each one. Remember this are based on my experience, you might be looking for different use, take this article as reviews for different types of boxing gloves. This is not an expert advice. Your coach might recommend you entirely different pair that is bias to his opinion.

I prefer lace versus strap and here is why!

I am standing at 4’10 inch/ 152cm and weigh 116.6lb/ 53kg. You can pretty much imagine how “long” my arm and “petite” my hand is. When it comes to selecting my clothes, t-shirts, pants it is more different to find something that fit. I have tried two different types of gloves, the one with regular strap and lace. Keep in mind for general population it maybe

Regular Strap

I remember always doing mitt work with those strap gloves, I had to work harder by squeezing my fist. I did not know other type exist until my buddy, keep help gave me to use his lace boxing gloves because I did not bring mine. Man, it sure fit, nice and tuck in my knuckle feels good. When I didn’t have to use my mental energy to squeeze my fist harder, I put my focus on only the real work. My punches are much smoother and more powerful.

When you box you should be relax, shoulder are not tense up and feel empowering at the same time, it is a lot more taxing on anyone competing. Why would anyone be struggling with his or her pair of gloves? Over the years, I prefer smart work. Working harder might be detrimental to your wrist overall hand anyway.

I am not one to diminish and turn down a regular strap gloves, it has it’s own advantage. If you only have a few minutes to wrap your hands and put on glove during class, this comes handy. I mean you don’t want to be the only person struggling to put on gloves if you have the lace one. You want to avoid being that person who is always asking help from anyone in class to help you lace your gloves. So I say this is easy, fast, simple and definitely convenient when it’s for boxing glass.

**This is not an article to say which one is better but if you do have the same struggle as I do then look into the lace ones.

Lace

The main reason I love lace pair of gloves it is because I can tie and adjust it to how tight and lose I want it to be. It snugs and fit like a good pair of pants that you own. Each time I put on this pair, I don’t have to worry about the gloves coming off from my hands and my wrist feels extra protective. I rather feel protected than not because it depends if you are sparring, hitting heavy bags or even being ask to do push up with gloves on we all need the wrist to stay stabilize.

I would suggest you to take more time to consider getting a lace pair as soon as you have a weird feeling on your wrist after boxing. This is reason why boxers who compete are particular about gloves that they wear. They have multiple for different training. Of course this is not to suggest you get a few pair, get better quality always!

The brand that I was using for lace pair of gloves is called Title. They have been a name brand when it comes to boxing gloves. Check them out!

Some in house brand and prestige brands comes with range of price. There are other part of a glove that you need to consider is the cushion right on your knuckle. If you are someone who is new to boxing, depending how often you box, use this guide to help you so you can skip the guess work.

  1. I feel there is no hard and fast rule concerning this. I incline myself towards lace. In theory we can lace our boxing gloves up on our own. But it may not be a good idea for a few obvious reasons. The problem with self lacing our boxing gloves isn’t that we can’t do it, but it very likely won’t be tight enough to be effective. But in my book, laced boxing gloves are great.

How do you use a lace and loop?

    1. Yes I agree with it not tight enough to be effective. My fist and forearm are smaller than the average person so usually, I pre-tie the laces before using them. If it’s in the gym I get a coach to help me out.
