Here are guidelines of how to and what to look out for so learning boxing is a pleasant and enjoyable journey. On top of learning how to box, get in better shape for yourself, you will meet some great people in the gym.
Staff hours
It depends if you are a student or working adult, gym operating hours are my top priority when I pick a gym. I used to be in the service industry and worked odd hours. By the time I end my shift and go over to the gym, it is almost closed. My option left was a gym that is open till late and early mornings. So I picked a 24hr gym and didn’t need a coach or class because I already know the basics of working out. It was definitely convenient for me at that time. I never failed to consistently work out for over a year.
Different coaches and type of classes
If you are a beginner the more you should be particular with the number of choices of coaches you get coaching from so this way you won’t get bored easily. Every coach has a different style, you want variety when you first start out because if you only have 1 coach for all different classes, you get complacent with how you learn things. If your boxing gym in a class is a lot of people, you might not get the attention you need from 1 coach.
Vibes or environment
The saying you are who you surround yourself with is true! If you step in a boxing gym and don’t feel welcome by someone who works in the boxing gym, make sure you run away from that place. I’m not saying every member should be smiling at you but it should feel like you can actually keep up and learn at your own pace and not feel abused. I have heard from other members who have had bad experiences in other gym like coaches not paying attention, other members goes hard on some partner drills….. I say follow what your instinct tells you after 1 session in the gym.
I remember my experience was great overall, even the founder of the gym gave me a complementary 1 on 1 personal training session. I never had to look for other boxing gyms again. The rest is history !
