Which age is best for boxing?

There is no specific age to start boxing. I have seen boys and girls as young as 4 years old to over 60s who still box. Boxing is overall a good fitness and great benefit to health for everyone. Of course, this is not a cut and dry rule. If you are not sure to start because of these reasons below then maybe there is a way around to learn boxing.

Afraid of getting punch

You don’t actually punch someone when you learn boxing. Boxing has basic fundamentals that you likely will have to go through if you sign up for any boxing class. You will jump rope, shadow box, learn how to jab, hook, cross, conditioning like jumping jack, burpees, mountain climbers and the list goes on. You hit the heavybag but get punch by someone.

There might be times when you have to partner with someone else in class. Still, you won’t end up being punch in the face! If you have a bad feeling about who you are partner up, let your coach know that you want to change partner. Boxing is far from violent, it is empowering when you are done with 1 class.

You don’t feel fit at all

You have this urge to start some sort of fitness into your lifetsyle and think you find that boxing can be something fun but you haven’t do anything for years that is related to exercise. Here is what I can tell you, I was a personal trainer and many times anyone who has not done any sort of exercise before my class in the gym, no one died!

For a start, as a coach, we are supposed to have different level of difficulty for every movement. Guideline for classes should be safety over exerting forces. You can always go on your own phase without worrying about another person in class who has been there for weeks or months. Focus on what you can do, not what you can’t.

Injuries, aches and pain

Alright, this needs to be address before you start any physical activity anyways. If your knee has been bothering you, then see a doctor. Know what your limitation are and adjust according to it. Maybe you can only shadow box without hitting the heavy bags if your knuckle hurts before from heavy bags. Be smart about training. End of it all, you want to have fun too.

Too young or too old

If you are trying to enrol your children to boxing, then find out from the gym what age do they allow kids to join in. Some boxing gyms has kids boxing class if not consider setting up boxing bags, gloves and boxing online training for your kids, do it together. Alternatively, hire a personal trainer to coach your kid. For anyone above 8years old and above, age is just a number for boxing.

Here is my personal thought and experience being in different gyms, I have seen from all walks of life who comes in to learn boxing. Age is really just a number. Never doubt yourself with limiting beliefs. Any sort of physical movement is always better than not doing anything. Boxing is back to sweet science not just throwing random punches. I love this sport and always recommend anyone to do it.

Will you give it a try or what is your thought on age factor for boxing?

  1. My first reaction to the question of what age is best for boxing, was that there is no age restriction when it comes to boxing. Kids from a very young age want to get involved in boxing. And yes, punching and fighting is something entirely different. Boxing is a sport and also a form of martial arts.

But at what age should kids start wearing gloves when they are doing boxing? Or can they continue with training and having fun boxing without wearing gloves?

    1. If they start boxing at age of 5, it is highly recommended to wear both hand wrap and boxing gloves. As soon as it’s their first time boxing to be more specific. I personally never start to any boxing training without gloves. It’s a good practice to protect the health of one’s wrist and also knuckle.
